How to prepare for a CIO interview

JM Group

Whether you are choosing your successor or planning your next move, here are some good examples of interview questions for CIOs.

1.       How do you intend to set your priorities?

2.       How do you intend to secure sustainable business alignment in the IS/IT organisation?

3.       How will you make senior management aware of the need of IT in the business and how will you make IT resources be more aware of business driver?

4.       What would your proposed activities included for your first month of employment?

From this you can gather if the person is a leader or an ‘enforcer’.  A leader wouldn’t implement any new strategy unless he/she fully understands the environment.

5.      How will you go about determining whether IT is a business partner or simply a service provider and why is this important?

6.       How can you help the business increase revenues, decrease costs, improve customer service, be compliant and secure? In other words, how can you apply technology to benefit the business?

7.       What would you do to move our organisation forward?

8.       How would you create a framework for quantifying IT value to business?

9.       How would you create a framework for assessing the need for transformative steps leveraging the value quantification framework?

10.   Typically IT is seen as an enabler for Business rather than driver for Business. As a CIO or IT Director how would you draw a balance between the two?

11.   Typically what is the most potent IT requirement for a growing organisation?

12.   What makes an organisation like us future-ready using IT?

13.   What is the most complex system/project you have ever designed or directed?

14.   What skills do you have that compliment your professional IT experience, or vice versa?

15.   Do you have any experience with ERP systems?

16.   Regarding continuous education, in what ways do you stay on top of the latest technology and trends?

17.   Describe a situation where you have transformed IT into a strategic competitive advantage for your organisation.

18.   What strategy do you have to drive the IT in the newer scheme of things, and achieving our organisational goals?

19.   Is IT for you a business driver or a transformation and support aid and what does that mean for your strategic approach?

The right answer to this question will depend on how the hiring company sees the role of IT.

20.   How will you correlate your capabilities with the company's vision?

21.   If you only have 60 days to transform this company from the IT standpoint, what would you do and more importantly why?

22.   How would you turn things from a cost centre to a profit centre?

23.   How will you create our IT Infrastructure to allow IT to help us make money and increase profitability?

24.   How can we be agile enough to meet demands of our environment today but not lock us out of changes that will be necessary tomorrow?

25.   How would you create an environment that will allow us to make quick changes as we see opportunities?

26.   How will you encourage your senior IT staff to get out of their comfort zones and be more open to looking at disruptive technologies that will help us create that competitive advantage and move IT more into helping to generate bottom line revenue?

If you are looking to hire an exceptional leader or you would like to be considered for leadership opportunities, please get in touch and we’d be happy to discuss things with you.
